System Administrator Checklist

AC Directory Policies and Services
Maintain user policies and profiles on the server, includes additional policies needed to drive mapping, user restrictions or protections for the accounts

Review Audit logs Tasks
1. Check application log for warning and error messages for service startup Errors, application or database errors and unauthorized application Installs
2. Check security log for warning and error messages for invalid logons, Unauthorized user creating, opening or deleting files
3. Check system log for warning and error messages for hardware and Network failures

Perform/verify daily backup Run and/or verify that a successful backup of system and data files has completed Run and verify Hard Drive Raid consistency checks for mirrored drives
Tools Used NTI Shadow Backup and Restore Software / Windows Dos Shell CHKDSK Command

Keep systen updated install any security patches or windows updates to keep the system updated with the latest version
Tools Used Windows Update service - built in, also use Microsoft's update website

Track/monitor system performance and activity Check for memory usage Check for system paging Check CPU usage
Tools Used Windows built in Task Manager /System Monitor software

Check All Hard Drives Check for errors and free space on any of the hard drives Keep Data optimized on hard-drives
Tools Used Windows built in Disk Defragmenter / Disk Management / Disk Quotas

Update Anti-Virus signature file Download and install current Anti-Virus signature files
Run Anti-Virus scan on all hard-drives Scan all hard-drives using current Anti-Virus signature files
Check Vendor Websites for Patch Information Check vendor websites such as Microsoft, Sun, HP, Oracle, etc. for New vulnerability information including patches and hotfixes this is done for Java, Flash, and Adobe. This includes third party software on the system such as QuickBooks or programs that the company uses.
